What would cause a car to stop running, its lights to shut off while at speed on the highway if you turned on the bright lights?

Basically an over-draw on the electrical system. An electrical system that has been giving me problems for the last 8 months. I have changed the alternator twice in an attempt to fix it.

What I need is to know what is causing the massive drain.

While I was stranded on the side of the highway the car had NO electrical power at all. No lights, dash lights, NOTHING. When it started working again the emergency flashers were making the interior and exterior lights alternate. It finally started and I couldn't use the turn signals, radio, radar detector, anything other than the lights and running motor.

When I got home I checked all the fuses and battery connections and it was all in working order.

I don't know what would cause intermittent electrical over-draw just by using the car lights.

UPDATE: I had the battery, alternator, and starter checked. They are all good. It has to be a short, or a ground wire has come loose. But if it was a short then whatever that quit wouldn't work again...

UPDATE: It was a loose ground wire. All fixed. Thanks all.
