Fire Fox 2.0

Would it be nerdy of me to boast about the fact that I am running Firefox 2.0 a full 24 hours before its official release?

That auto spelling check built in is freakin' nice.

I couldn't find any themes that are supported yet. Well, black-japan isn't anyway. Some of my extensions were not supported as of now. Faster fox, session saver, and tab-browser preferences being the main three. Most of tab-browser stuff is incorporated anyway so no need for that one.

Maybe Not.

I think most of the people remember me bringing up the Toyota Yaris as a viable vehicle for me. My argument was Toyota reliability, cheap price, great gas mileage, and very cheap to insure. EVERYONE reamed that idea. Even my parents didn't like it. Hell, Road & Track, Automobile, Car and Driver, and Motor Trend didn't even recommend it.

You can read one of the better reviews of this car at The Truth About

The reason I bring this up is because Toyota has experienced such high demand for this vehicle they bumped the base price $900. That might not seem like that much, but this car only retailed for $10,780. (Now $11,670) That is 8.35% of the cost of the vehicle. That is kinds steep don't you think? I mean the Corvette Zo6 was only bumped 6.56% to $70,000. When you’re throwing that kind cash at a car are you even going to notice an extra $4310? I can see someone not wanting to pay $900 more for an $11K car. That increase in MSRP pushes the Yaris into the next price category. If you add the two options I wanted I could get a Corolla cheaper. Then that makes it a price competitor with the Scion TC, which is a much cooler car IMO.

Am I just splitting hairs? Or am I trying to talk myself out of the idea of Yaris?

Is there a better car?

All three?

The Yaris may fit my personality (boy, that is a sad thought) and I already drive the soulless menace known as the Camry. What, if anything, could make me seem...less boring perhaps?
A Mazda? No not a Mazda. Okay an RX8, if they didn't suck as cars. Well, what else is there?
How about the Mazda 3? Not the plane Jane, but the MAZDASPEED variant. Not the 156HP 4-Cyl but the turbo 265 horse version. Compare that to the 106 from a Yaris.

And on top of that it looks a whole lot better than a Yaris.

What is it with me and hatchbacks and station wagons?

If you want to read more on this car, The Truth About has a fantastic review.

Given the updates of the 2008 KLR650... That is the year I HAVE to get. All the updates fix the problems the last 20 years of KLR's suffered from. Plus the bike more powerful and has better looks.

See for yourself.

UPDATE 29 Apr 07:

Kawasaki's site has updated to the new KLR.

Top Speed review.

Cycle World review.

Think of it this way. This bike is 1/2 the cost of a yaris, gets better gas mileage, half the cost to insure, and is probably safer to boot. haha. This way I can keep my car to 300K and when I have $400 a month to throw down I'll get a car. It seems like I can justify any purchase I make ( or even think of making ). The reason this seems like a good idea to me is because all the roads I travel are VERY biker friendly. Hell, in gas savings alone that is almost $100 a month for me.

400 miles
28 mpg
14.28 gallons
$171.36 a month in gasoline currently.

Now to figure the bikes mileage.

400 miles
50 mpg
6 gallons

I'll throw the extra insurance costs of the bike in with the car and see what I get. Actually see how much it will cost me. Thinking about it, I'll save 20% on my car insurance because I'll be able to kick down to a lower mileage category.

It looks to be a win. ;)

UPDATE 6May07:

At $4 a gallon the motorcycle becomes a must. The car would cost me $228.48 every month and the motorcycle is $96. Remember this is fuel ONLY. So that is $132.48 that could go to the purchase of said motorcycle and throw in another $80 and there you have it....

UPDATE 7May07:

The fuel savings alone pay for the bike. At 24 months, 10%, and $1500 down that is $177.... That is $45 difference. WIN! WIN!

UPDATE 16 May 07 : KLR World Review.

UPDATE 16/6/2007: Mazda aims to beat track record at the 'Ring.

That should really tell you something about this car. The stock MPS is running what Corvettes and NSX's were running just a few years ago. It has matched the lap time of the Honda S2000.

Oct 11 -2007:

"Modified by Mazda Australia Motorsport Manager, Allan Horsley, this extreme makeover involves a recalculation to the car's Powertrain Control Module (PCM), allowing its standard 2.3-litre DISI turbo engine to generate a massive 210kW of power at 5300rpm and 425Nm of torque at 4400rpm."

281 horsepower and 313 lb-ft of torque...

Rock Radio WTF?

Here in Huntsville we have a fairly good rock station. The Rocket (Rocket City DURRR!!) will play just about anything. This is the station that I first heard Strummin' With The Devil. Here lately they have this thing called the "Comedy Cafe" during the lunch time hour. Weird Al's "White and Nerdy" has been getting some good play.

But one thing that struck me as odd is for the first time EVER I heard a song from Garbage played. Not off their new album, but their first. Nevermind that they are playing this like it is new (and in a slot dedicated to NEW tunes). Well, maybe it was 10 years ago it was, but not today. I'm still finding it hard to believe it has been 10 years. Sheesh, that means I have been a Garbage fan since I was... 10. Damn I'm old.

I just thought that was strange. Cool, but strange.

Dear Sony,

I hate you.

When you produce a product that has software that software doesn't work with the worlds most popular operating system you have done something wrong.

When one has to patch said software TO UNINSTALL IT!!!!! You have done something wrong.

Please die and go to hell.

FireFox (And The Memory Bug)

Has anyone ever noticed when you surf the web for a (long) while with tons of tabs opened and you happen to look at the task manager under the processes tab, Firefox is using 150+ mb of system memory. I have, on several occasions, seen the memory usage up to 400mb.

Well there is a "fix" if you want to call it that.

Now you can limit how much info Firefox saves when you have multiple tabs but suffer no speed decrease.

It is nice to have memory left over when you minimize Firefox.

In theory IE7 should do this when it is pushed out in a Windows update in the next couple of months. And did you know my site displays right in IE7, but IE6 can't make heads or tails of it.

Go figure.

Wifi Boost.

On last Thursday they had a simple way to boost the signal from a wireless access point; the Windsurfer parabolic antenna.

Well, I made one right after the show and WTF? I get a signal LOSS when it is on the routers antenna.

What did I do wrong? I'll make a few more to see if I did something wrong but there isn't really anything to mess up.

Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention

I'll be at the 40th Fiddlers Convention today.

If you notice the URL it is hosted on the campus of Athens State. What's funny is I don't have to go to class because of it AND I get credit for working the MACS (Math and Computer Science Club) booth AND get in free. I'll see about getting some video of anyone playing.

They should have some Axis camera's up, but I don't think they will have sound.

Founders Hall Stage
Brown Hall

Then there is BringPopcorn 12 showing SHAUN OF THE DEAD!!!

10:45 Update:
I have some video of the "Strummin" Convention but all the video has my commentary mocking people WHO LOOKED RIGHT AT THE CAMERA THEN STOOD IN FRONT OF IT!!! So it isn't really any good.

Then on top of that I used a free digital camera to take a lot of pictures. Yeah, those suck too.

Then I managed to get my sisters camera... HOLY COW! That thing takes great pictures.

Lots of EXPENSIVE instruments around and creepy dolls.

Detroit Desease

Here is a great article that applies to the post below.

Badge Engineering

There was an article on The Truth About Cars a few days ago reviewing the "new" Chrysler Aspen.

It is a great article. I suggest you find time to read it and the newly formed "Chrysler Death Watch" but I digress.

Several of the commenters went into a rant about how this vehicle isn't badge engineered.

I don't see how they came to this conclusion.

Just look at this thing.

Now compare it to this...
Other than the tail lights and grill what is different? It is the Durango with $10,000 more on the sticker price. It even has the Caliber's interior.

Even the name says "late to the game". When is the last time you have seen an Aspen?

How is that NOT Badge Engineering? (Other than the 1980's Aspen thingy.)

I can only think of one more horrid example of badge engineering and that would be the Trailblazer/Envoy/Rainier/Bravada/Ascender/9-7X.

Would a sane person market the same vehicle six times in the same class so they can compete against each other?

Can anyone tell which is witch? Although to GM's credit they are not going to update the Trailblazer for 2010. They opted to discontinue it all together. Plus they don't make Oldsmobile anymore and don't import Isuzu and stopped that "Saab".

On that note might I suggest the "General Motors Death Watch" series that is also at

I guess dumb stuff like this is the reason the big 2.5 are is such deep poo.

The "Domestic" manufacturers are not the only one that have this practice. The Toyota Camry was called the Holden Apollo in Australia up until a few years ago. The Euro-Accord is actually a Acura TSX. But I guess GM, Ford, and DCX are the only ones that rebadge a vehicle and sell BOTH in the same place. Or in GM's case 6 vehicles.

Next time I'll get into Mid-size cars and how several manufacturers should die if they actually had to sell their cars.
